Publication of the report on forestry and wood supply chain in mountain areas

The report « The utilisation of mountain wood and the organisation of   mountain wood industries – Examples of good European practices » is now available on the website of Euromontana. It is the result of work carried out by Euromontana in 2011-2012, in partnership with the French Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural affairs and Spatial Planning who co-financed this study.

The study aims to highlight specific initiatives and companies that make significant contributions to the sustainable development of the mountain forest sector and generate policy recommendations to promote development in these sectors. Eleven examples of companies and projects demonstrating the dynamism of mountain stakeholders and the potential of mountain forests and the timber industry have been identified and are presented in this report, which starts with a description of the context of the situation of forests in mountainous areas. An analysis of the success factors of the eleven examples of good practice presented and the environment in which they have been developed led to the drawing of conclusions and recommendations to promote more wide-scale exploitation of mountain forests and to establish wood transformation industries in mountainous areas that encourage the creation of added value for the territory of production.

The report highlights some key questions for the development of forest and wood supply chain from mountain areas. You should find there some inspiring ideas that can be implemented in a simple and rapid way for the benefit of European mountain areas.
