In the framework of the European Entrepreneurial Region Award initiative, launched by the Committee of the Regions, Brandenburg (Germany) was elected in 2011 as one of the 3 European Entrepreneurial Regions.
One of the aspects that led this region to this award was that Brandenburg places emphasis on ecological modernization of the regional economy, supporting creativity and innovation as key factors for successful economic development, and provide new revolving financial instruments to complement the range of available funding.
As for Brandenburg’s commitment on Ecological modernization, energy, materials efficiency and clean technologies, the government supports projects for the increased use of renewable energies and for improving energy efficiency and security of supply in accordance with the guidelines and objectives of the regional “Energy Strategy 2030” with a focus on clean technologies.
As it is expressed in Euromontana’s energy position document (2009), we believe that local, regional, national and European authorities should introduce incentives to rethink the production processes of business in mountainous regions, especially small and medium-sized enterprises in terms of improving energy efficiency and attracting enterprises to mountain areas for energy security. This is the reason why, we believe that Brandenburg initiative could inspire other rural territories in mountain areas.
