Electric bikes as an innovative way to discover the Swiss mountains

A 700 kilometers tourism road with electric bikes
This initiative, called “La Route du Coeur” consists of 13 stages from the Lake Léman to the Lake Constance throughout 20 historic villages. The principal characteristic of this route is that from the 1st April to 31st October, tourists can rent electric bikes to easily do this 700 kilometres road.

To make this experience more comfortable, along the way there are some battery change stations, some signs with additional practical information about the route itself, restaurants, accommodation and there are also additional services such as a luggage transport. In addition, a train makes the exact same travel, which facilitates the management of this route in terms of security and comfortability.

Renting of electric bikes allows all types of tourists to enjoy this road, and not only very sportive persons, and its combination with the train enlarges also its possible use.

Why transferring this good practice in other mountain areas?
This initiative is very interesting as it provides a solution to enjoy sustainable transport, without suffering of the slopes of the roads. It appears as an innovative approach to encourage sustainable tourism and clear energy while preserving the environment. In addition, electric bikes can be used by tourists of all ages. This initiative has been possible thanks to the participation of private and public actors.

Other mountainous regions have already developed interesting sustainable transport initiatives, including for bicycles, as shown in the Good Practices Guide of our Move on Green project.
