Participate in the Reading Mountains Festival

Based on the success of the 1st edition, the Alpine Convention is organizing the Reading Mountains Festival again this year and we invite you to participate!

The “Reading Mountains” festival is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Alps – its many languages, different, yet similar cultural heritage and its arts in all shapes and forms. For this occasion, the Alpine Convention invites you to celebrate Alpine culture and diversity with us by organising your own event around the International Mountain Day – 11 December. To get an impression of “Reading Mountains”, you can have a look here. In the scope of the initiative we also prepared a film that captures the idea and the emotions behind the project.

As part of the “Reading Mountains” festival, partners of the Alpine Convention across the Alpine region organise different events promoting and celebrating cultural diversity in the Alps and we would like to invite you to be part of the festival. Join us by organizing an event, targeting your members/inhabitants/partners and celebrating International Mountain Day under the umbrella of the Alpine Convention. In 2016 the Festival “Reading Mountains” will take place for a whole week – between 5 and 11 December, in order for all partners to have more space for their own creativity and planning. Awebpage is dedicated to the festival, where you are invited to register your event as soon as possible and order the promotion material that we are making available.

Background on the festival

The initiative “Reading Mountains” was launched by the German Presidency of the Alpine Convention and the Permanent Secretariat in 2015 with the goal of organising some events to celebrate International Mountain Day. The initiative was very well accepted by many local partners, stakeholders. Consequently, almost 100 events were organized across the Alps and beyond around the 11th of December 2015, in all Alpine countries, featuring all four Alpine languages, numerous of dialects, and uniting thousands of people. The initiative has proven to be much more than we foresaw; it has connected people across the Alps, despite their being physically distant, in discussing similar issues and evaluating the meaning, impact and purpose of Alpine literature.

Information about the Alpine Convention

The Alps, with their biodiversity, water and wood reserves, are the natural, cultural, living and economic environment for over 14 million people and an attractive tourist destination for approximately 120 million guests every year. To protect and sustainably develop the Alps, an international treaty called the Alpine Convention was signed between the Alpine Countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia and Switzerland). Together with its protocols the Alpine Convention focuses on managing different topics (transport, energy, tourism, farming etc.), but it also pays special attention to the people living in the Alps and constantly tries to find ways to make their life in the Alps easier. You can find more about the Alpine Convention and its many activities here.

We would be very happy if you considered joining the initiative. We are looking forward to your feedback, questions and inputs and, of course, to your event!
