The European Commission presented its Communication on “Harnessing talent in Europe’s regions”. Released on 17 January, the text proposes measures to address the lack of workforce and skilled employees, a trend that is affecting many mountainous regions that are ageing and depopulating.
The European Parliament welcomes the Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas developed by the European Commission since 2021 but suggests going further. This is the message sent by MEPs in the report adopted in plenary session in December 2022 on “a long-term vision for the EU’s rural areas – Towards stronger, connected, resilient and prosperous rural areas by 2040”.

Every 3 years, the FAO and the Mountain Partnership prepare for the United Nations a report on the progress of sustainable development in the mountains. With only 8 years left to implement the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, what has been the progress in mountains in recent years?
The United Nations adopted on 15 March 2022 the resolution proclaiming 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists. Euromontana invites all stakeholders to mobilise in 2026 to give strong visibility to pastoralism and urges European decision makers to adopt an Action Plan for Pastoralism with concrete measures to support the continuation of the sustainable and extensive practices which are intrinsic to pastoralism.
