Euromontana supports the Andorra Declaration which calls for stronger global action for mountain areas

At the 7th Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership, held in Andorra la Vella from 26 to 28 March 2026, members adopted the Andorra Declaration – “Elevating Mountain Action Beyond 2030”. The declaration reaffirms the global commitment to sustainable mountain development and calls for stronger international cooperation to address the growing challenges faced by mountain areas.
As long-standing member of the Mountain Partnership, Euromontana welcomes and supports this declaration, which highlights the crucial role of mountains for people and the planet. Covering around one quarter of the Earth’s land surface and home to about 1.2 billion people, mountain areas provide essential ecosystem services, safeguard biodiversity and act as the world’s “water towers”. Yet, they are also among the territories most exposed to climate change, environmental degradation and socio-economic vulnerability.
The declaration outlines several priorities to strengthen global action for mountains, such as:
- Stronger integration of mountain issues in global and national policies, including climate, biodiversity and sustainable development frameworks.
- Greater support for resilient mountain communities, counting better access to services, sustainable livelihoods and inclusive decision-making involving local communities, women and youth.
- Increased climate and environmental financing for vulnerable mountain areas, with stronger public and private investment for climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, ecosystem restoration and sustainable tourism, as well as exploring dedicated support for mountain regions within existing international financing mechanisms.
- Stronger research and data collection, including improved capacities to observe social, environmental and socio-economic changes in mountain areas, strengthening science and research, and promoting knowledge sharing and data collection at relevant territorial scales.
- Promotion of sustainable and climate-resilient mountain economies, such as responsible tourism, sustainable agrifood systems and nature-based solutions that protect fragile ecosystems while supporting local livelihoods.
These priorities resonate strongly with our longstanding commitment to sustainable development in European mountains and to ensuring that mountain perspectives are better recognised in international and European policies.
During the Global Meeting, Euromontana was also re-elected to the Steering Committee of the Mountain Partnership, alongside our member CIMO (Centro de Investigação de Montanha). This renewed mandate will allow us to continue contributing to the strategic direction of the partnership and advocating for the needs and potential of mountain areas.
Euromontana therefore calls on European, national and regional policymakers, as well as other mountain stakeholders to share and promote the Andorra Declaration, helping to raise awareness of the importance of mountains and to strengthen global mobilisation for their sustainable future.
